Below is a list of things to try if you are having technical issues with installing or running Sins of the Solar Empire - Rebellion. Another resource for seeing if your issue is being addressed can be found in the Sins forum: --

Make sure your system meets the minimum requirements:

    • OS: Windows 10 / 8 / Windows 7 SP1 / Windows Vista SP2
    • Processor: 3 GHz Intel Pentium 4 Processor or Equivalent
    • Memory: 2 GB Available System Memory
    • Graphics: 256 MB Video Card w/Pixel Shader 3.0 Support (Radeon X1650 / GeForce 6800* or Better)
    • DirectX®: 9.0c
    • Hard Drive: 5 GB HD space
    • Sound: DirectX 9.0c Compatible Sound Card
    • Other Requirements: Keyboard and Mouse (w/scroll wheel), Broadband Internet connection for Multiplayer
    • * NVidia video chipsets must use driver version 296.10 or higher and mobile cards be set as the primary video chipset for the game.

    • Processor: Intel Core i5/i7 Processor or Equivalent
    • Memory: 4 GB Available System Memory

Please go to your video card manufacturers website and install the most current drivers.  This is especially important if you have recently updated to Windows 10.  A full reinstall of the divers, even if they are current, is HIGHLY recommended.

Use the link(s) below for updating:

Note: Please perform a "clean installation" if you have an Nvidia graphics card. The below screenshots will help with how to do that:

For ATI \ AMD driver uninstalling:

Content Still Encrypted:

First uninstall the game from Steam:

Then select to install it from your Steam library:

Crashing after updating to 1.86:

If you recently updated to version 1.86 and your save game no longer works you can use ConvertData_Rebellion.exe to fix your save game.

1. Copy your save game (likely located somewhere like C:\YourName\Documents\My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\Save-SinglePlayer) to your Sins Rebellion install (likely c:\Steam\steamapps\common\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion).

2. Open the command window here. (start->cmd, cd\steam\steamapps\common\sins of a solar empire rebellion).

3. Type "ConvertData_Rebellion saveGame yourSaveGame yourNewSaveGame" in the command window.

4. Copy the new save game back to the location from which your save game originally was found.

5. Restart Sins and load the newly fixed save game.

Permissions (Windows 10 Upgrade):

For some people, we have seen that permissions for the 'My Games' directory have changed after a Windows 10 upgrade (fresh Windows 10 installs would not have the issue).  If you have recently upgraded to Windows 10, and Sins is crashing or will not load \ save \ save your settings changes, please download and run the following:

Re-install Redistributable Files:

Navigate to where the game is installed (default locations below):

32 bit operating system: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\_CommonRedist
64 bit operating system: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\_CommonRedist

Once there, please run ALL of the following files:

After, please reboot and try to run the game again.

Bad .bin file:

Please click the following link in Internet Explorer and then save the file when prompted:

Once saved, double click it to run it and then press the appropriate key for the game you are having the issue with. T key for Trinity, R for Rebellion or B for both. Once that has been done, run the game again and activate when prompted. Does the game start normally now?

Missing settings:

Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time. A "Run" window will appear. Please paste the path below in the box and click OK:

%userprofile%\Documents\My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\Setting

If there are no settings files, sometimes the game may be unable create them.

Please download the zip file at and extract it's contents to the appropriate directory:

C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion  (the settings folder is included in the zip).

Corrupt settings:

Click start and enter this in the search

%userprofile%\Documents\My Games\Ironclad Games

Delete the Rebellion directory and try again

Other things to try

-'The Purge'

Please uninstall Sins from Steam by following the instructions below.

STEAM: Right click Sins in your Steam library and select "Delete local content":

You will be prompted to delete the game (Dead Man's Draw is just an example):

You will be prompted to uninstall the game:

After Sins has been uninstalled, please press the Windows key and "R" at the same time. In the window that appears, paste the path below and hit enter:

  %userprofile%\Documents\My Games

In the "My Games" folder, if there is still a folder remaining called "Ironclad Games" please rename it so a new one will be generated.

Once again, press the Windows key and "R" at the same time, and use the path below:

  %programdata%\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

You should see a folder named "License", please rename this as well.

Lastly, please navigate to the path below and delete the entire folder for Sins:

STEAM: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion

Note: The path above assumes you've installed Sins to the default Steam directory. You may need to adjust the path accordingly if it is installed to a non-standard location.

Restart your computer and reinstall Sins using Steam. After it has completed the installation, please create a new save and let us know if you experience any further issues.

Please disable any addons or mods you may have installed, as these can occasionally cause some erratic behavior. After you've disabled/uninstalled the mods, please restart Sins: Rebellion to see if your issue persists.

Reverting the current patch:

Within the properties for Sins on Steam, you'll find the Betas:

With this menu, try selecting a previous patch to continue playing before the game updated.

Running the game as admin:

Run the game as administrator by right clicking on the game like so.

This is located in the game install folder (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion).

Running the game windowed:

Try navigating to this directory: C:\Users\{USERNAME}\Documents\My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\Setting

Then open the rebellion.user.setting file and set this option:

VideoIsWindowed TRUE

See if that helps, if not try right clicking on the game in Steam and select properties then uncheck this option

Running the game from the Dev.exe:

Try running the Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion Dev.exe file first. This is located in the game install folder (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion)

After doing this, then try running the game via the normal game .exe file (Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion.exe) direct from the same folder where the game is installed. Next, try launching the game again via the Play button from the Steam library page.

Disabling McAfee Anti-Virus

Before downloading the game, please disable your McAfee anti-virus. After the game has finished installing and you've activated the game, you may turn your McAfee anti-virus back on. If you receive the error that you are missing the executable, then your anti-virus has quarantined the games .exe file. You'll want to make sure your anti-virus is allowing the .exe file and marking it as safe.

Clients with AMD video cards

Disable \ unload AMD's Gaming Evolved application and try to run the game again.

Overclocked systems

If you have your system or video card overclocked, you may want to try running at the stock clocks and then try the game again.

Disable XFire or VirtuMVP

If you have XFire or VirtuMVP installed, please disable them before playing Rebellion.

Starting Windows with Clean Boot

Click the link below to run through how to start Windows in a clean boot state. Then try running the game. Exit and reboot. Then try booting normally and see if the game starts.
