The game does not run or it crashes at or shortly after launch

This can be for a number of reasons. Most common are video drivers and a problem with the redistributables that the game needs installed to run. The instructions below reference the Steam version of Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition.

Drivers:

Please go to your video card manufacturers website and install the most current drivers.

Intel:

ATI \ AMD:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

 

Redists:

If the above does not help, navigate to where the game is installed (typical locations below) and run the following files:

32bit: C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition\redist
64bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition\redist

- DXSETUP.exe
-vcredist_2005sp1_x86.exe

After, please reboot and try to run the game again.

 

Corrupt .bin file:

Please press the Windows key and the 'r' key to bring up the run dialog. Paste in the following and hit enter: %ProgramData%\Stardock\GC2UL

The window that comes up will have the sig.bin activation file for the game. Delete it. Run the game again and activate when prompted and see if the issue persists.

 

Missing \ Corrupt settings:

Delete the 'Prefs.ini' file in: C:\Users\YOURWINDOWSUSERNAME\Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

Try to run the game again.

 

Other things to try

 

Running the game as admin:

Run the game as administrator by right clicking on the game like so.

This is located in the game install folder (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition).

 

Running the game windowed:

Try navigating to this directory: C:\Users\YOURWINDOWSUSERNAME\Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

Then open the 'Prefs.ini' file and set this option:

Fullscreen=0
