General Offworld Trading Company Troubleshooting

Below is a short list of things to try if you are having technical issues with installing or running Offworld Trading Company. Another resource for seeing if your issue is being addressed can be found in the OTC forum:

If your issue has been mentioned, but not addressed in the forums, please continue with the steps below.

Minimum/Recommended System Requirements




Check to see if there are any Opt-in patches for the game

Game Loading Issues \ Crashes 

-Update Video Drivers



For Nvidia driver uninstalling/clean installing. The below screenshots will help with how to do that:


For ATI \ AMD driver uninstalling:

Please note that you may have more than one video card so be sure to update both if that is the case.

-Verify Integrity of Game Cache

-Launch the d3d9 version (PC)

Locate the game in your Steam library, right click it, select Properties, Set launch options, add this line: -force-d3d9

-Re-install Redistributables (PC)

Download the redist file from the link below and install \ repair:    

-Re-install DirectX (PC)

In the following location: 

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Offworld Trading Company\_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010

Run: DXSetup.exe

Reboot and try to run the game again.

-'The Purge'

Please uninstall OTC from Steam/Galaxy by following the instructions below.

STEAM: Right click OTC in your Steam library and select "Uninstall...":

You will be prompted to delete the game: 

After OTC has been uninstalled, please press the Windows key and "R" at the same time. In the window that appears, paste the path below and hit enter:

  %userprofile%\Documents\My Games 

In the "My Games" folder, if there is still a folder remaining called "OffWorld" please rename it so a new one will be generated.

Lastly, please navigate to the path below and delete the entire folder for Offworld:

STEAM: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Offworld Trading Company

Note: The path above assumes you've installed OTC to the default Steam/Galaxy directory. You may need to adjust the path accordingly if it is installed to a non-standard location.

Restart your computer and reinstall OTC using Steam/Galaxy. After it has completed the installation, please create a new save and let us know if you experience any further issues. 

-Disable Steam Overlay

Click on Steam and click on the "Settings" button. Click on the "In-Game Settings" tab.

Uncheck the box next to "Enable Steam Community In-Game" and click OK.

Disable the Steam Overlay on specific games only by right-clicking on the game title, click on "Properties" and uncheck "Enable Steam Community In-Game" in the "General" tab.

Video Issues (could also contribue to crashes):

-How to configure your resolution and settings dialog before launching the game

Windows: Hold Shift while you launch the game to bring up Unity's graphic options


Mac: Hold Option while you launch the game to bring up Unity's graphic options

-Low Game Settings:

Download the following link and copy to the appropropriate location:

\Users\USER\Library\Application Support\Offworld

\Documents\My Games\Offworld

Try running the game again.

Transferring Campaign Progress to another Mac

Move the files:

  • SfbSettings
  • ScenariosSave.bin 

To the location below:

~/Library/Application\ Support/Offworld


Placing a ticket

If you have done the above, we would like to get any and all information for resolving your issue.

Names of entities, resources, upgrades, etc, are extremely helpful in our attempts to reproduce the issue. Also, knowing at what point in the game you have issues (can't start the game, plays for some time but then...), what type of game (single or multiplayer), and screenshots \ video clips are very helpful with finding solutions. Jing (free), can be used for this: (PC and Mac versions)


Please download and run the following utility:

This is a tool that we use to gather relevant log files and basic information about your computer. If your issues can be seen in a save, make sure its included in the zip and at a point where your issue can be readily observed.

Be sure to include this file - OptionsSave.xml

C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Offworld


Additionally, if you experienced an issue while playing through campaign:

  1. Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time
  2. A "Run" window will appear. Please paste the path below in the box and click OK:
  3. Post a copy of your CampaignSave.bin file retrieved from the above folder to your ticket

Be sure to include this file - Player.log

  1. Open Finder to your user base folder (~)
  2. Enable visibility of the Library folder if it is hidden
  3. In the user base folder Right-Click->Properties->Show Library folder
  4. Post ~/Library/Logs/Unity/Player.log
